MDS - Master of Dental Surgery

MDS programs offer advanced clinical training that enables dentists to provide high-quality dental care to patients, including complex procedures and treatments.

ABOUT

Duration: 3 years (2 years for BDS holders with a recognized PG diploma in the same specialty)

Eligibility: Must qualify NEET MDS and hold a BDS degree from a DCI-recognized institution with a mandatory 12-month rotatory internship.

Affiliation: Dental Council of India (DCI) recognized. Institutions include NTRUHS (Andhra Pradesh), KNRUHS (Telangana), AIIMS, PGIMER, BHU, and Deemed Universities.

Career Scope: MDS postgraduates can work as specialist dental surgeons, academic faculty in dental colleges, research associates in dental sciences, consultants in hospitals, or start private clinics. MDS holders can also pursue PhD or fellowships in India and abroad.

COUNSELLING TYPES

National Level Counselling – MCC (Medical Counselling Committee)

     Covers 50% seats in all Government Dental Colleges in India

     100% seats in Deemed Universities, AIIMS, PGIMER, and Central Institutions

     Open to all NEET MDS qualified candidates

      Includes institutions like Maulana Azad Dental College, BHU, AMU, etc.


State-Level Counselling – Respective State Health Universities

     Remaining 50% Govt seats + 100% Private College seats

     State domicile rules apply for convener quota (A category)

     Management and NRI quota generally open to non-local candidates too

     Examples: KNRUHS (Telangana), YSRUHS (Andhra Pradesh), KEA (Karnataka), TN Health (Tamil Nadu), etc.

STATE WISE COUNSELLING

A Category – Free/Convener Quota

    Government-subsidized seats with low tuition fees

    Only available to local state domiciles

    Requires a high NEET MDS rank

    Admission handled through state counselling authorities

B Category – Management Quota

    Open to both local and non-local candidates

    Tuition fee is significantly higher than A category

    NEET MDS qualification is mandatory (cutoff generally lower than A category)

    Seats are filled via state-level counselling under management quota

C Category – NRI Quota

    Reserved for NRIs and their sponsored wards

    Highest fee structure (usually in USD or INR equivalent)

    Requires valid NRI documents and sponsorship proof

    Available in private and deemed universities
